When you think about some of the amazing architectural designs around the world, no doubt one of the first ones that spring to mind would be the the Golden Gate Bridge, which is located in San Francisco, California.

Long before the bridge was even a concept, travelers would need to take a ferry across the bay area to get to the other side. This posed a major problem once the automobile industry began to boom in the United States as ferries were slow and expensive to operate and maintain.

Joseph Strauss, Irving Morrow and Charles Ellis were commissioned to come up with a design that would be suitable for the earthquake prone region of California. They engineered a design that incorporated cables that would allow the bridge to be suspended.

The idea was that in the event of an earthquake, this design would allow parts of the structure (mainly the road itself) to freely move or swing about. This would minimise any structural damage and reduce the risk of a bridge collapse.

This has proven to be a very effective engineering feat and has been used in multiple other bridge designs around the world.

The Golden Gate Bridge has become quite popular for numerous reasons but it’s notable known for it’s bright red colour which stands out at night due to lighting placed in specific regions of the bridge.

Every year, thousands upon thousands of tourists visit the landmark to take photos and experience the drive across the bridge for themselves.
